Mad Science Lab

  • At the Mad Science Lab, your student will work on a new experiment each week! Through project-based learning, students will gain experience and understanding in applied scientific techniques, including observation, experimentation, creative problem-solving, teamwork, and creating their own experiment logbook!

    Activities include science experiments, research, and games in German and English. Each week students will have time to work on school homework, with dedicated help in English and German. Snack is provided and walking pickup is offered from AEA Elementary in South Park, San Diego. 

  • Mad Science Lab runs on Tuesdays from 2:30-5:30.

  • We use classrooms on-site at Golden Hill Rec Center in San Diego, CA. Walking pickup is offered for students from AEA Elementary.

  • Elementary School students in grades TK-5.

Meet Your Instructors

  • Randall Ulyate, PhD, RYT500, TESOL

    Collective Founder & Educator

    Randall is a yoga instructor, educator, and mom of an AEA student. She has a BA in English, a PhD in mythology, a graduate certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), and holds a 500-hour advanced yoga certification. Randall spent over 15 years working as a teacher, director, and trainer with the YMCA of Los Angeles.

  • Lorena Wentling, MPH

    Early Childhood Educator

    Lorena Wentling grew up in Quito, Ecuador. She earned her Bachelor's Degree in Childhood Education with the Concentration in Teaching and Initial Education Management in 2011 at the Pontifical Catholic University of Ecuador. Later in 2019, Lorena obtained a Master of Public Health with a concentration in Mental Health at National University.

  • Maria Zschemisch

    Early Childhood Educator

    Maria Zschemisch is a Preschool Teacher and Early Childhood Educator. She completed her degree in Early Childhood Education in 2006 in Germany and is now working on her Bachelor’s in Professional Health and Social Services. She was born and raised in Germany and moved to San Diego in 2012.

  • Vanessa Klein

    Cooking Program Director

    Vanessa Klein is a Lakeside resident, chef, and mom of three kids. Vanessa has worked in kitchens and schools around the greater San Diego area, working with elementary and middle school aged kids. She is the founder and owner of Ceres & Co, a small-batch meal service that delivers homemade farm-to-table meals.

  • Jessica Snodgrass, M.Ed

    Jessica grew up in sunny San Diego knowing she wanted to work with kids. She received her BS in Elementary Education and her M.Ed in Curriculum Development. She has spent the last 15 years creating and teaching lessons, activities, and songs for students and campers from 2 yrs of age to high school for different zoological institutions.
